The Police Command in Enugu State announced on Friday the successful rescue of a female kidnap victim and the demise of one suspect during an operation in Udenu Local Government Area.
According to Daniel Ndukwe, spokesperson for the command, the operation on Friday also led to the recovery of exhibits from the criminal gang. The recovered items include five rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, a large machete, a smaller dagger, four mobile phones, and four torchlights.
Further items found at the scene include two power banks, two memory cards, N51,700 in cash, various food items, spoons, clothing materials, and face caps, among other possessions.
The rescue operation was initiated following credible intelligence regarding the abduction of the victim, which occurred around 3:30 p.m. within the Ezimo Community in Udenu Local Government Area.
Acting on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Giwa, the Divisional Police Officer of Udenu Division swiftly assembled a joint security team. This team comprised police operatives, soldiers from the Nigerian Army, members of the Neighbourhood Watch, and Forest Guards.
The joint team tracked the suspects to the Agu Orba Forest, near the Ohebe- Orba axis of the local government area. Upon the operatives' arrival, the hoodlums engaged them with gunfire. The security operatives returned fire with superior force, resulting in the neutralization of one of the suspects. The remaining suspects reportedly escaped with various gunshot injuries.
Following the confrontation, the abducted victim was safely recovered without any physical harm. She has since been debriefed and reunited with her family.
The police stated that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
The Commissioner of Police commended the bravery and collaborative spirit of all security operatives involved in the successful operation. He also urged the public to continue providing timely and accurate information to support ongoing security efforts in the state.
