Eric Chelle, the head coach of Nigeria’s national football team, has identified Calvin Bassey as the premier central defender at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations taking place in Morocco.

The Fulham defender was involved in every game for Nigeria during the tournament and consistently demonstrated strong performance. His authoritative presence on the field was crucial in helping the Super Eagles achieve three consecutive clean sheets throughout the event.

Unfortunately, Bassey’s journey in the AFCON was cut short when he received a second yellow card in Nigeria's semi-final loss to Morocco, which went to penalties. Consequently, the 26-year-old will not participate in the upcoming third-place playoff against Egypt.

During a press conference prior to the medal match, Chelle commended Bassey’s growth and significant impact on the team, highlighting his exceptional performance.

The coach emphasized that Bassey improved with each match and evolved into a leader within the squad.

"With every match, he continued to elevate his performance," Chelle remarked. "At this AFCON, he shone brightly, delivering an amazing performance."

Chelle further mentioned his personal rapport with Bassey, noting that he consistently encourages him to challenge himself at both club and international levels. He aspires for the defender to be recognized among the world's elite by the end of the next season.

"If I had to name the best centre-back of this AFCON, I would select Calvin Bassey," stated Chelle. "We’ve agreed that he must strive for continual improvement every time he plays for both Nigeria and Fulham. His commitment to hard work, both on and off the pitch, has enabled him to rise as a leader within this team."

Nigeria is set to clash with Egypt in the third-place match on Saturday at Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca, with the kickoff scheduled for 5 p.m. Nigerian time.
