The European Commission has issued a formal accusation against four well-known pornography websites for not taking sufficient measures to stop minors from viewing adult material. This development could result in substantial penalties under the European Union's digital regulations.
In its initial findings, the Commission identified Pornhub, Stripchat, XNXX, and XVideos as platforms that permit minors to access their services with only basic verification, often requiring little more than a simple confirmation of age.
According to the EU, this lax approach does not adequately safeguard the rights and welfare of children, thus violating its Digital Services Act guidelines. Concurrently, the Commission has also initiated a distinct investigation into Snapchat, expressing concerns that the platform may not be sufficiently protecting its younger user base.
Officials indicated that the inquiry into Snapchat will focus on whether the platform has put minors at risk of grooming and exposure to content relating to illegal activities, such as drug trafficking. This marks the first scrutiny of Snapchat under the EU's Digital Services Act.
A representative for Snapchat emphasized that ensuring user safety is of utmost importance. “As online risks evolve, we continuously review, strengthen, and invest in these safeguards,” the spokesperson stated, affirming the company's commitment to cooperating with the Commission and complying with regulatory standards.
These actions are part of a broader trend of heightened oversight by regulators across Europe concerning the safety of children online and the digital accountability of major platforms.
