The Nigerian federal government has announced a livestock development strategy centered on security, targeting Benue State as part of its efforts to resolve conflicts between farmers and herders.

During an event in Makurdi marking the introduction of the Benue State Commission for Peace and Reconciliation’s five-year Strategic Plan (2026–2030), the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, outlined the new approach, which is backed by the SPRiNG programme.

Maiha, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, highlighted that persistent disputes over land and water resources significantly undermine the agricultural potential of Benue. He pointed out that while the state has approximately 3.4 million hectares of land, more than 634,000 hectares of cultivable area remain untapped.

He advocated for the modernization of livestock farming, suggesting it would alleviate pressures from open grazing and convert an ongoing security issue into an economic opportunity.

The Minister also revealed plans to revitalize inactive facilities through a Public-Private Partnership model. This includes ranches located in Gwer East and Ikyogen, as well as the Yandev Pig Progeny Centre and various poultry demonstration centres.

Representing the state's Governor Hyacinth Alia, Deputy Governor Sam Ode praised the strategic plan as a significant advancement toward sustainable peace and growth.

Additionally, Dr. Ukoha Ukiwo, Team Leader of the SPRiNG programme backed by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), stressed the importance of establishing robust institutions capable of addressing grievances before they escalate into conflict.
