FIFA President Gianni Infantino has officially stated that Iran’s national football team will take part in the upcoming World Cup, with their games set to occur in the United States as previously outlined.

"Iran will be at the World Cup," Infantino remarked. "We’re particularly pleased because they are a very, very strong team… The matches will be held as scheduled according to the draw." This declaration arrives amidst questions regarding Iran's participation, stemming from ongoing geopolitical issues involving the US and Israel.

Prior to this announcement, Iran's football federation had been “negotiating” with FIFA about moving their matches to Mexico due to concerns for safety. However, Infantino rejected this relocation, confirming that plans would remain intact.

Iran’s matches are slated against New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles on June 15 and June 21, respectively, followed by a game against Egypt in Seattle on June 26. The World Cup, commencing on June 11, will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

In spite of FIFA’s reassurances, political leaders have expressed apprehensions. Donald Trump previously indicated that while Iran would be “welcome at the World Cup,” participation might bring risks “for their own life and safety.”

Officials from Iran, including Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali, have also raised concerns about whether the nation could effectively participate.

Nonetheless, Infantino stated he has personally interacted with the team. "I’ve seen the team, I’ve communicated with the players and the coach, so all is well," he noted. This announcement solidifies Iran's position in the tournament, despite broader geopolitical tensions creating uncertainty around global sporting events.
