FIFA President Gianni Infantino has expressed the organization's unwavering confidence in Mexico’s capability to organize significant football events, specifically highlighting the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
His remarks come in the wake of heightened tensions within the country, primarily due to violence associated with drug cartels.
Major Mexican cities, including those set to host FIFA events like the World Cup Playoff in March and the main tournament in June, have seen unrest, prompting concerns and calls for FIFA to reassess its position.
Nonetheless, Infantino worked to alleviate worries, indicating that FIFA is aware of the escalating security situations and remains fully confident in Mexico’s leadership.
He noted that the organization has no intention to alter the schedule for forthcoming events due to these concerns.
"We are currently analyzing and monitoring the state of affairs in Mexico," Infantino explained. "From the beginning, I want to convey our absolute confidence in Mexico, in President Claudia Sheinbaum, and in the national authorities. We believe everything will proceed smoothly."
"There are matches scheduled in Mexico within a month for the World Cup Playoff, and the stadium will be reopened. Mexico is an incredible nation, a country passionate about football, and as with every country globally, challenges may arise."
Infantino praised Mexico's significant contribution as one of the three co- hosts alongside the USA and Canada for the successful 2026 World Cup bid, expressing optimism that the tournament will be a grand event.
"On behalf of FIFA, I want to express complete confidence in President Sheinbaum. We are in consistent communication with the presidency and relevant authorities, keeping a watchful eye on the situation.
"The World Cup is set to be an extraordinary celebration."
