Nigeria's electricity grid has faced its first collapse of the year 2026, as generation plummeted to just 20 megawatts as of 1 PM on Friday, January 23.
According to data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), the OMOKU gas power plant was the sole operating plant during this time, indicating a stark decrease from the grid's earlier level of 3,996.93 megawatts around noon.
This collapse comes less than three weeks after a partial breakdown was reported in December 2025.
