Francis Uzoho has been reappointed as the primary goalkeeper for the Super Eagles by head coach Eric Chelle, following Stanley Nwabali's unavailability due to his current lack of a club.
Uzoho is currently with Cypriot First Division team Omonia.
Nwabali finds himself without a team after concluding his contract with Chippa United, raising concerns as the national team prepares to resume activities later this month. Given these circumstances, Chelle swiftly identified Uzoho as his preferred choice for the goalkeeping role.
Previously, Uzoho served as the backup goalkeeper during the most recent Africa Cup of Nations, where Nigeria achieved a third-place finish. Meanwhile, Chelle seems to have reservations about Maduka Okoye, who reportedly turned down a call to join the squad for the tournament after it was communicated to him that he would not be guaranteed a starting position.
Okoye, who plays for Udinese Calcio, was once regarded as a leading candidate for the key role. However, it is believed that the coach perceived his refusal as a challenge to his authority.
Uzoho will likely face competition from Arthur Okonkwo of Wrexham AFC, who has recently switched his international allegiance from England to Nigeria. Although Okonkwo can participate in friendly fixtures, he must obtain clearance from FIFA before he can play in competitive matches, including the forthcoming AFCON and World Cup qualifiers.
