The Ghanaian national football team has dismissed head coach Otto Addo, confirmed by the country's football association on Tuesday, with only 72 days left until the 2026 FIFA World Cup begins.
This decision comes in the wake of a 2–1 defeat against Germany in Stuttgart, just days after suffering a heavy 5–1 loss in Austria during preparations for the tournament.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced, "The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has severed ties with the Head Coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo, effective immediately."
Addo, who previously played for Borussia Dortmund, had been reappointed for a second term in March 2024. His tenure was marred by failure to secure qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, despite having notable players like Antoine Semenyo and Mohammed Kudus in his lineup.
Over 22 matches in his leadership of the Black Stars, Addo achieved 8 victories and faced 9 defeats.
He had led the Ghana team during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where they managed a 3–2 win against South Korea but were eliminated in the group stage following losses to Portugal and Uruguay.
Ghana is set to make its fifth World Cup appearance and has been placed in Group L, alongside Croatia, England, and Panama.
