Just hours after hosting an Iftar for prominent government figures at his palace, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II held a confidential discussion with a delegation from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, raising further speculation about the state's stance in the continuing emirship feud.

The meeting was confirmed by the Governor's spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, in a Facebook update on Wednesday morning, indicating it took place at the Gidan Rumfa palace.

Dawakin Tofa noted that present at the meeting were the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Ibrahim, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Sulaiman Wali Sani, along with himself.

He stated: “Shortly after the Iftar at Emir’s Palace, the Governor’s delegation had a closed-door meeting with His Highness.”

This development arrives as Kano gears up for the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations and the traditional Sallah Durbar.

The Durbar, a long-standing cultural parade, now faces uncertainty following conflicting announcements from government representatives regarding its occurrence this year, due to the unresolved litigation involving Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero.

Governor Yusuf reinstated Sanusi II in 2024; however, Bayero remains in a legal battle over his dethronement, maintaining the emirship contention.

Recently, the state government hinted that the dispute over the throne would be addressed soon, but the Iftar on Tuesday night and the subsequent meeting seem to indicate a strengthening relationship between the state administration and Sanusi II.

Many residents of Kano perceive the palace meeting as more than just a religious event, interpreting it also as a political move.

Experts suggest that the attendance of the Governor's representatives at both the Iftar and the private meeting signifies the administration's acknowledgment of Sanusi II as the Emir, notwithstanding the prevailing controversy.

With Sallah festivities approaching, the focus now turns to the fate of the Durbar and the authority that will oversee it.
