A concerned Nigerian, sharing via the X platform, has highlighted the severe impact of the rising cost of living on the financial well-being of citizens with modest incomes. He expressed worries about how individuals earning average wages are able to sustain themselves.
The user recounted a recent experience involving his uncle, who returned to Nigeria after living in Canada for six years. The uncle was reportedly taken aback by the dramatic increase in prices for staple foods and everyday items.
According to the post, the uncle visited a supermarket in Abuja with the intention of buying three loaves of bread. To his surprise, the final bill presented by the cashier amounted to N12,000, meaning each loaf cost N3,000.
Adding to the shock, the uncle discovered that the cost of fuelling a borrowed SUV for transportation throughout his visit had reached N300,000.
"How are salary earners commuting? How are parents handling school runs? When bread feels like luxury and fuel feels like punishment, what exactly is left for the average Nigerian?" the user questioned, encapsulating the widespread economic anxiety.
Excerpts from his post were shared, illustrating the gravity of the situation.
