The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, made a visit to Maiduguri on Tuesday, arriving just hours after President Bola Tinubu mandated that service chiefs relocate to Borno State to address the escalating terrorist activities. During his trip, Mr. Disu visited individuals injured in recent bomb explosions, who are currently receiving medical care at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

At the scene of the Monday Market bombing, Mr. Disu conducted an assessment of the area. Subsequently, he proceeded to the Borno State Government House and the State Police Command Headquarters. His engagements at these locations involved reviewing current security strategies and exploring ways to enhance coordinated responses to the ongoing security challenges.

The IGP affirmed that security measures in Maiduguri have been considerably strengthened. This includes increased police and military deployments, enhanced surveillance operations, and unified operational efforts across the city to preempt any future threats and safeguard the public.

Reports indicate that the explosions on Monday, suspected to have been carried out by suicide bombers, resulted in the deaths of at least 23 people and left over 100 injured. The attackers targeted three public locations: the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), the Post Office, and El- Kanemi Monday Market.

These attacks occurred shortly after terrorists attempted to breach a military position in Ajilari, an area adjacent to a Nigerian Air Force base and the international airport in Maiduguri. Around the same time, similar assaults were reported in Baga, Bututai, and Damboa. However, authorities from the police and military confirmed that these attempts were successfully repelled.
