Moses Itauma, the 21-year-old British-Nigerian boxer, showcased his talent on Saturday night in Manchester, securing a decisive victory against Jermaine Franklin. Itauma's win, which came via a fifth-round stoppage, improved his unbeaten record to 14 fights, all victories, and handed Franklin the first stoppage defeat of his professional career.
Expected to be a significant challenge for Itauma, the match offered a test against the more seasoned Franklin, who had previously fought prominent boxers like Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte without being stopped.
Right from the beginning, Itauma asserted his dominance, dictating the fight’s pace. By the third round, he had already knocked Franklin to the canvas. The bout concluded in the fifth round when a sharp uppercut destabilized Franklin, followed by a precise right hand that led the referee to halt the contest.
Following the fight, a representative from the World Boxing Organisation, Gustavo Olivieri, announced that Itauma has been recommended for a mandatory title shot, indicating a rapid progression in his career despite being early in his journey.
“I didn’t anticipate winning titles this soon. I’m just a young man pursuing my dreams,” Itauma remarked after the fight.
Itauma’s motivation extends beyond monetary rewards; he shared that his passion for boxing is deeply personal. "Boxing is like an addiction for me. I’m fighting for my own sake and for my family’s future," he explained.
As his record continues to shine, discussions about potential future bouts with elite fighters like Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury are emerging. However, Itauma is realistic about these encounters, stating, "Why would Usyk fight me? He has other priorities, and I doubt Tyson will want to face me either at this stage.”
With his knockout capability underscored by 12 of his 14 wins coming through stoppage, Itauma emphasizes that he’s yet to meet significant resistance as he climbs the heavyweight ranks. His current statistics reflect a fighter capable of finishing opponents early, a trait that may be tested as he faces more formidable adversaries in the future.
The matchup with Franklin marks another milestone in Itauma's career rather than a crowning achievement; his ongoing growth in the heavyweight boxing scene will be scrutinized as he faces tougher challenges ahead.
