Jada Pinkett Smith has shared that her public revelation about an "entanglement" with singer August Alsina was a calculated move designed to protect Will Smith's ego and to shield their family from prolonged public scrutiny.
While discussing her memoir, “I am, You are, We are, Worthy!”, Pinkett Smith explained that she intentionally chose to bear the brunt of public judgment to assist her husband in processing the situation at the time.
"So if I got to look like the adulterous wife to make sure you’re good, I’m gonna do it," she stated, recounting her decision to prioritise his welfare over her own public image.
The actress admitted that she had previously faced difficulties in balancing self-preservation with her commitment to her husband.
"I learned how to love myself and not leave Will on the side of the road. And I hadn’t learned how to love Will and not leave myself on the side of the road," she elaborated.
Feeling a sense of responsibility for the family's predicament, she opted to assume the role of the antagonist to conclude the intense public conversation.
"Okay, I’m the bad guy. I’m the worst. Great. Let’s be done with it. I wanted it done... Let's be done. And let's move on."
This fresh perspective offers insight into the couple's well-known 2020 Red Table Talk episode, which occurred before the highly charged 2022 Oscars event where Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage.
Pinkett Smith stressed that the entire experience was a significant learning opportunity regarding the intricate dynamics of their relationship.
Despite the worldwide controversy and public perception of their marriage, she maintains that these candid discussions were integral to a personal growth journey, aimed at enabling the couple to "be on the road together" as life partners.
