Joe Aribo, a Nigerian footballer, is believed to be on the verge of exiting Championship club Southampton as the January transfer deadline nears.
As the deadline looms on Monday, February 2, at 7 pm, Southampton continues to be active in the transfer market, focusing on bolstering their attacking options. Their head coach, Tonda Eckert, is also keen on reducing the squad size, as several players have found it challenging to secure regular playing time this season.
Aribo is one of several players placed on the transfer list, alongside Sam Edozie. The Saints had made attempts to transfer both players during the previous summer window but were unable to complete those deals at that time.
Addressing the situation, Eckert confirmed that negotiations are ongoing. He indicated that any potential transfer would need to benefit both the player and the club, emphasizing the complexities often involved in contemporary transfers, which frequently require the agreement of multiple parties. He added that discussions that had previously stalled are now progressing positively.
This season, Aribo has made only seven appearances in the Championship, with opportunities at St Mary’s being limited. Despite this, he played a critical role in the Super Eagles' journey to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations held in Côte d'Ivoire, although he was notably omitted from Nigeria's squad for the upcoming AFCON 2025 in Morocco.
With negotiations reportedly heading in a favorable direction, a move for the Nigerian midfielder before the January transfer window closes seems increasingly probable.
