Former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Joe Keshi, stated that it is essential for President Tinubu's visit to the UK to result in genuine economic and educational advantages for Nigerians rather than mere ceremonial observances.
Keshi anticipates that various agreements and memoranda of understanding (MOUs) will be established during this official trip, covering a range of topics from defense to science and technology. However, he pointed out that the true challenge lies in effectively translating these agreements into tangible benefits for the populace.
He remarked, "I expect a host of agreements and MOUs will emerge—potentially concerning defense and technology among others. The prevailing issue is how to transform these agreements into real-world benefits that positively impact the lives of Nigerians."
"Once the glamour fades and the curtains close, the substantive work will commence, particularly when the President meets with the Prime Minister, followed by the implementation phase of the decisions taken during the London discussions," he added.
Keshi stressed the critical need for these signed agreements to produce significant outcomes, particularly in the fields of education, science, technology, and healthcare. He suggested that support in defense training for both military and police forces would be immensely beneficial for Nigeria.
He also highlighted the importance of not repeating past mistakes, noting that many previous MOUs lacked implementation. "We must ensure there is a capable team in place to see this through. Historically, several MOUs have been signed without action, so it is crucial we have a strategy for implementation this time around, which I believe will ultimately benefit the Nigerian people," he conveyed.
