The Kano State Government is intensifying its commitment to providing fundamental infrastructure across all 44 local government areas, aiming to address long-standing development deficits in its rural communities.
Alhaji Mohammed Tajo Othman, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, announced this initiative while detailing the ministry's strategic direction and priority projects under the current administration led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
In a released statement, Othman emphasized that the government's focus is on crucial sectors including primary healthcare, water provision, education, agriculture, electricity, and the development of rural roads. He asserted that robust infrastructure is fundamental to elevating living standards and stimulating economic activity.
He further explained that the ministry's approach is closely aligned with the governor's pledge for fairness, justice, and an equitable distribution of resources throughout the state.
According to the commissioner, the administration is undertaking the renovation of neglected schools to improve the learning environment, alongside the construction of feeder roads. These roads are intended to facilitate the transportation of farm produce to markets, thereby strengthening agricultural value chains.
Othman pointed out that this developmental agenda is backed by significant budgetary allocations. He cited the state's 2026 budget of N1.368 trillion, where education received 31 percent, health was allocated 16 percent, and infrastructure secured 25 percent.
Highlighting achievements in the education sector, the commissioner listed the hiring of over 6,000 teachers, the incorporation of 2,000 volunteer teachers, extensive rehabilitation of numerous classrooms, and the distribution of approximately 789,000 school uniforms.
He also noted the 50 percent reduction in tuition fees at state-owned tertiary institutions, the reinstatement of foreign postgraduate scholarships, and Kano's top ranking nationally in the 2025 NECO examinations.
Regarding the health sector, Othman mentioned that UNICEF had recognized the state's efforts in rural water and sanitation projects. He also revealed plans for a Memorandum of Understanding with the Rural Electrification Agency in 2025 to support solar energy initiatives across all local councils, underscoring that local government funds have been disbursed transparently without external influence.
