A substantial number of Muslims in Kano State, comprising members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) and other Islamic groups, participated in a demonstration calling for an immediate cessation of Israeli occupation in Palestine and denouncing recent strikes against Iran.
The marchers took to the streets following Friday prayers at the Fagge Central Mosque, carrying the flags of Palestine, Iran, and Nigeria.
Throughout the rally, the crowd chanted slogans such as “Free Palestine,” “Death to Israel,” “Death to America,” and “We stand with Iran,” signifying their support for Palestinians and Iran.
In a symbolic act of protest against what they alleged was an attack on Iran’s Supreme Leader, demonstrators carried two coffins draped in U.S. and Israeli flags through the streets, accompanied by images of former U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Sheikh Sidi Munir Mainasara, who led the protest, informed the gathering that the event was organized to commemorate Quds Day.
He explained that Quds Day is observed globally on the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan and has been a tradition for over four decades.
“Today being the last Friday of this month of Ramadan, the event is observed with public awareness campaigns, lectures and discussions in many cities in Nigeria and other parts of the world,” Mainasara stated.
He further noted that this year’s Quds Day observance held particular importance due to the ongoing conflict impacting Palestinians.
Mainasara cited reports from the United Nations, humanitarian organizations, academic researchers, and media outlets indicating that numerous Palestinians have been killed or injured since October 2023, with many others displaced by the hostilities.
He condemned the ongoing actions against Palestinians, expressing solidarity with those he described as facing oppression.
“Finally, we strongly condemn the ongoing atrocities being committed against Palestinians and reiterate our call for the freedom and liberation of Palestine and other oppressed people of the world,” he added.
The protest was one of several Quds Day activities held internationally to raise awareness about the Palestinian cause.
