Kun Khalifa FC has officially declared its exit from the ongoing 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), citing what they refer to as "unfair sanctions" by the league management.
In a firm press statement, the club’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Amaefula, stated that Kun Khalifa could not continue competing in a league that "overlooks the difficulties and realities encountered by its member clubs, opting for punishment rather than equity and justice."
The Imo-based club's decision follows disciplinary actions taken by the NPFL after they did not travel to Maiduguri for their matchday 24 game against El- Kanemi Warriors on February 2, 2026.
The league's authorities found Kun Khalifa's explanations for missing the match to be "unacceptable," resulting in a deduction of three points and three goals, along with a fine of ₦10 million.
In response to these penalties, Kun Khalifa asserted that they had formally communicated their difficulties to the NPFL, which included issues with the team's transportation. However, they alleged that the league did not acknowledge or consider their reasons.
The club further accused the NPFL of changing the match schedule without sufficient consultation.
"The ruling to forfeit 3 points and 3 goals, along with a fine of ₦10 million, is not only excessive but also clearly signals the NPFL’s partiality against our club," the statement indicated.
The club expressed that the sanctions represent a gross injustice and reflect an unwillingness to interact with teams in a fair and transparent manner.
"We call upon the NPFL to reevaluate their policies and practices to guarantee that clubs receive fair treatment and respect. We also urge other clubs to advocate for reforms and greater accountability from the league administration," the club added.
Kun Khalifa FC is among four privately owned clubs participating in the current NPFL season, alongside Remo Stars, Ikorodu City, and Barau FC.
