Over 130 participants took to the streets of Lekki, Lagos for the fifth edition of the 7Km Run/Walk aimed at promoting fitness and wellness.
This exercise, organized by the group I am Alive and Thankful in collaboration with a dedicated committee, was themed ‘Accountability Walk/Run.’
On Saturday, everyone was celebrated as they walked and ran for fitness, with the event starting and concluding at the Divine Mercy Catholic Church in Lekki.
While the primary focus wasn’t on competition, two participants were highlighted for their impressive performance. Samson Ukpa took the lead in the male category, while Thomas Blessing was recognized in the female category, both receiving attractive gifts from the organizers.
Additionally, the youngest participant, a 2-year-old named Speranza Williams, and the oldest participant, Mr Edobor, aged 62, each received a cash prize of N250,000.
One participant, Apewe, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “I haven’t done any exercise in about three months. It’s refreshing to come out and get energized. Connecting with people from various backgrounds was enjoyable. I had fun and would definitely do this again. Fitness isn’t just about being slim; it includes mental and physical aspects and hinges on mindset. Participating occasionally is encouraging; age is no barrier to exercise.”
A Ghanaian participant named Jane shared her excitement about completing the walk. She said, “Good health comes at a cost, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself, even though I opted to walk all the way. My hope is that we could extend our distance; if we managed 7km now, perhaps next time we can tackle 10km.”
Onome Obruthe, one of the event organizers, described the gathering as excellent, noting the significant turnout exceeded targets. She highlighted the aim of promoting a healthy lifestyle and mentioned that this year they offered cash prizes and gifts for motivational purposes for the first time in five years.
Tochi Pearl, another member of the organizing team, affirmed their delight with this successful edition, particularly due to the enthusiastic participation.
The event was a resounding success, with participants experiencing the joy of fitness and community engagement while walking together.
