The Lagos State Sports Commission has unveiled plans for the upcoming 2026 Swimming Trials, which are set to take place on Sunday, March 22, at the Rowe Park Sports Complex located in Yaba. This event is part of the state's commitment to enhancing the development of grassroots aquatic sports.
These trials are open to both male and female swimmers who are aged 16 and below. Competitions will be featured across three age brackets: 15-16 years, 13-14 years, and 12 years and younger. Participants will engage in a variety of events, including the 50m and 100m freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly races, as well as the 4x50m mixed freestyle and medley relays.
In a statement to the media, Lekan Fatodu, the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, emphasized the significance of the trials as an essential component of the state’s strategy for long-term sports development.
“These trials are more than just a selection process; they signify a clear intention,” Mr. Fatodu remarked. “We aim to identify talent at its foundational stage while establishing the necessary infrastructure for that talent to thrive. Every young swimmer competing at the Rowe Park Swimming Pool on March 22, 2026, symbolizes the future of Lagos swimming and, by extension, the future of aquatics in Nigeria. We have created optimal conditions; it is now time for our athletes to prove themselves.”
Additionally, Aderoju Ope-Ajayi, Chairperson of the Lagos State Aquatics Association, highlighted that this initiative is part of a broader vision to establish a sustainable framework for swimming in Lagos.
“This initiative represents our legacy,” Ms. Ope-Ajayi asserted confidently. “The trials extend beyond merely selecting swimmers for a season; we are fostering a culture of competitive swimming in Lagos that is structured, inclusive, and sustainable. We want every parent to view the swimming pool as a venue of opportunity for their children, and for every young athlete to realize that this path leads to meaningful prospects. This trial serves as an open invitation, and I urge coaches, parents, and young swimmers to embrace it with confidence and ambition.”
The scheduled trials are unfolding against the backdrop of ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Government, under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to promote sports development. The administration has prioritized improvements in infrastructure and initiatives that target youth to strengthen athlete development across various disciplines.
Officials believe that the swimming trials underscore a growing commitment to structured grassroots sports and will play a vital role in identifying and nurturing the next generation of elite swimmers.
Athletes and coaches interested in participating have been encouraged to reach out to the Lagos State Aquatics Association for registration and additional information ahead of the event.
