Lai Mohammed, who formerly served as Nigeria's Minister of Information and Culture, has claimed that Peter Obi, the candidate from the Labour Party in the 2023 Presidential election, would have been unsuccessful even if he had amassed 10 million votes.
In a recent podcast, Mohammed, who held his position during the Buhari administration, stated that Obi failed to achieve 'one-quarter of the votes cast in 25 states,' which is a constitutional requirement for claiming the presidency.
"Even if Obi had got 10 million votes, he wouldn’t have won. This is because he still could not get one-quarter of the votes cast in 25 states. It is even on record that he could not provide agents at about 40,000 polling units," the former minister remarked.
Discussing the elements that influenced the 2023 election, particularly in Lagos state, Mohammed noted,
"For the first time in the history of politics in Nigeria, ethnicity and religion played a very frontal role."
He further mentioned the repercussions of the #EndSARS protests, highlighting that many young voters in Lagos town were seeking retribution, which did not favor the APC or Bola Tinubu during the elections.
