In an alarming incident, suspected militants from the Lakurawa group have launched an attack on a mosque, resulting in the deaths of five worshippers and injuring three others. This violence is believed to be a retaliatory act following a thwarted ambush on the convoy of a high-ranking officer in the Nigerian Army.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the assailants targeted the Dadinkowa community mosque located in the Maiyama Local Government Area. The attack unfolded on Wednesday evening while congregants were engaged in prayer, during which the terrorists opened fire indiscriminately on those present.

Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, confirmed the incident, stating that the assault was linked to the perpetrators' previous military losses.

According to Usman, the sequence of events began on February 24 when Major General Bemgha Koughna, General Officer Commanding the 8 Division, was ambushed while en route to visit troops deployed in the region.

The General’s convoy encountered intense gunfire from militants believed to belong to the Lakurawa faction while traversing a forested area near Mayama Hill. The troops engaged the attackers, resulting in a fierce exchange of fire, during which five militants were eliminated, successfully averting the ambush.

In the wake of the mosque attack, Usman confirmed the fatalities, stating that five individuals succumbed to their injuries from gunfire, while three others were promptly transported to nearby medical centers for treatment.
