A librarian in West Virginia has been apprehended on allegations of attempting to recruit individuals through social media to assassinate President Trump.
As detailed in a criminal complaint, Morgan L. Morrow, 39, from Ripley, was recorded in a TikTok video stating, "Surely a sniper with a terminal illness can’t be a big ask out of 343 million."
This comment was interpreted as advocating for Trump's assassination. On January 26, Morrow was charged with one count of making terroristic threats.
The staff member at the Jackson County Public Library was taken into custody at her residence and reportedly confessed to authorities that her TikTok post was intended as a threat directed at President Trump.
According to the complaint, Morrow expressed her personal motives for wishing harm upon the president, although the specifics were not disclosed.
She asserted that she did not plan to execute the threat herself, as indicated in the complaint. However, law enforcement officials conveyed that such remarks could serve to motivate or persuade others to undertake the threatened action, regardless of the speaker's personal intentions.
Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger commented, "When you saddle up on the horse of stupidity, you have to be prepared for the ride that follows."
He emphasized their commitment to ensuring that no one is influenced to follow Morrow's lead and act on her alleged plans.
Sheriff Mellinger further reiterated that threats of this nature are unacceptable, irrespective of one’s political views. "It's permissible to critique the government and express dissent," he remarked, "but advocating violence and conspiring to enact such violence is certainly crossing a line."
In response to the incident, the Jackson County Public Library released a statement assuring the public that it was handling the librarian's actions internally. "The comments made by an employee do not reflect our organization's mission, values, or standards of conduct," the statement read.
