A man was handed a 35-year prison sentence for the death of his girlfriend's 20-month-old daughter in Dearborn County, United States.

Jesse Sartin, aged 25, pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated battery that resulted in death.

In July 2024, Sartin and the child's mother took Caroline Boggs to the hospital after an incident.

Sartin informed medical personnel and later law enforcement that the young girl had been standing on an ottoman while he prepared her a bottle when one of their dogs knocked her over.

He claimed that he called the child's mother and they both rushed to St. Elizabeth Dearborn with Caroline.

The toddler was subsequently transferred to Children's Hospital, where she underwent surgery to alleviate brain swelling by removing a portion of her skull and addressing a hematoma. Unfortunately, she passed away a week later.

Medical professionals later informed investigators that Caroline's injuries appeared to be consistent with shaking rather than an accidental fall.

Ultimately, Sartin confessed to having shaken Caroline and acknowledged it was not the first instance.

He stated that he considered the child as his own, but the couple had been facing financial pressures after he lost his job, as noted by investigators.

Prosecutor Lynn Deddens highlighted that victim impact statements described Caroline as a vibrant and inquisitive child whose life was abruptly taken.

Family members articulated the profound trauma and sorrow caused by her untimely death.

Deddens remarked, "This case signifies a tragic and preventable loss of life. Caroline was a healthy and cherished child who relied on adults for protection. Instead, she endured unimaginable abuse from someone entrusted with her care while her mother worked. This sentence underscores the gravity of that betrayal and ensures accountability for the defendant."

Upon his release from prison, Sartin is forbidden from having any contact with children during the five years of his probation.
