Pep Guardiola has admitted that Manchester City was comprehensively defeated by a superior Manchester United side in their recent Premier League encounter. The Spanish manager acknowledged that his team did not perform at the required level during the 2-0 loss, which further diminishes their chances of winning the league title.

City's inability to secure a victory in their last four league matches has seen them fall six points behind Arsenal, who also have a game in hand. The scoreline at Old Trafford could have been even more damaging for Guardiola's squad, as Manchester United delivered what was arguably their best performance of the season under the new management of Michael Carrick.

Manchester United's Cameroonian midfielder Bryan Mbeumo (C) celebrates with Manchester United's Ivorian forward Amad Diallo (L) after scoring the opening goal against Manchester City at Old Trafford on January 17, 2026.

Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu were the goalscorers for United, who also had three other goals disallowed due to marginal offside calls. Guardiola was direct in his assessment, stating, "The better team won. We weren’t at the level required to win this game. In many departments, we weren’t there. They were better. They had an energy we didn’t have."

The match could have taken a different turn early on when Diogo Dalot's challenge on Jeremy Doku's knee, which appeared to involve studs, went unpunished with anything more than a yellow card. However, Guardiola stressed that his team could not use this decision as a justification for their defeat.

"Was it a red card? Yes. But it would be poor for me as a manager to blame the red card," Guardiola added. "Would it have changed the game? Who knows. If the players have that as an excuse, then we have a big problem."
