Michael Carrick, the interim manager of Manchester United, has expressed confidence that the club is still mathematically and competitively in the Premier League title race, acknowledging, however, that overtaking the top teams will be a significant challenge.
On Sunday, United achieved a hard-fought 2-1 comeback victory against Crystal Palace, propelling them to third place in the league standings, just behind Arsenal and Manchester City.
This latest win adds to United’s impressive run, with six victories and one draw from their last seven games. Nevertheless, Carrick highlighted the importance of staying grounded and realistic regarding their prospects of catching the league leaders.
Looking ahead, United's next match against Newcastle United could be crucial in their pursuit of the title. Currently, they are 13 points adrift of the top spot, a deficit that Carrick admits would necessitate consistent high performance to close.
"You cannot rule anything out in football, but we have to be realistic," Carrick remarked. "There are two outstanding teams above us. I recognize the situation, and we need to secure many wins for our ambitions to materialize."
