The highly anticipated biographical film about the late music legend Michael Jackson, titled ‘Michael,’ has captured the leading position at the North American box office. It garnered an estimated $97 million in ticket sales throughout the weekend.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and released by Lionsgate, the movie chronicles Jackson’s rise from a young performer to a globally recognized superstar. His nephew, Jaafar Jackson, portrays the iconic singer. Industry observers have noted this opening performance as a landmark achievement for a musical biopic.
Audiences have responded positively to the film, with many appreciating its nostalgic and celebratory approach. However, critical reception has been more divided. Some reviewers have commented on what they perceive as a surface- level depiction that sidesteps the more contentious elements of Jackson’s life, including previous allegations of sexual misconduct. Despite this, plans for a sequel are reportedly already underway.
The film’s financial success is not confined to North America; it has also brought in nearly $220 million worldwide, following its debut in various European territories.
In other box office news, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” secured the second spot with $21.2 million, maintaining its strong performance after several weeks at number one. Following that, Amazon MGM’s “Project Hail Mary” earned $13.2 million, contributing to its cumulative global earnings.
Rounding out the top five, Warner Bros’ horror film “The Mummy” collected $5.6 million at fourth place. A24’s romantic drama “The Drama,” featuring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, took the fifth position with $2.6 million, bringing its worldwide revenue to $80 million.
