Military Forces Successfully Rescue Abducted Anglican Priest in Enugu

The 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, alongside other security agencies, has successfully rescued Rev. Johnson Anayo Onugwu, who was kidnapped in Enugu State. The operation resulted in the neutralization of one kidnapper during a firefight.

Troops from the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with other security forces, have successfully rescued kidnapped cleric Rev. Johnson Anayo Onugwu from unidentified gunmen in the Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The cleric was taken from his home in the Ezimo community at approximately 1:00 a.m. on January 29, 2026, by armed attackers.

Based on actionable intelligence, the troops of the 82 Division Garrison were dispatched to the Udenu area where they tracked the kidnappers to the Itabolo vicinity.

The engagement occurred in Okpakeke community, where the armed forces clashed with the kidnappers, leading to the successful rescue of the abducted priest.

Throughout the operation, the security forces fired 30 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and did not report any casualties on their side.
