Troops from the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with other security forces, have successfully rescued kidnapped cleric Rev. Johnson Anayo Onugwu from unidentified gunmen in the Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The cleric was taken from his home in the Ezimo community at approximately 1:00 a.m. on January 29, 2026, by armed attackers.
Based on actionable intelligence, the troops of the 82 Division Garrison were dispatched to the Udenu area where they tracked the kidnappers to the Itabolo vicinity.
The engagement occurred in Okpakeke community, where the armed forces clashed with the kidnappers, leading to the successful rescue of the abducted priest.
Throughout the operation, the security forces fired 30 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and did not report any casualties on their side.
One of the kidnappers was reportedly killed during the confrontation.
Items seized at the location included one AK-47 rifle, two magazines, and 20 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.
The rescued cleric has been reunited with his family, while security agencies are actively pursuing the remaining members of the criminal group to ensure they are brought to justice.
The military has reiterated its dedication to maintaining operations against kidnapping and other criminal activities within the South-East region.
