The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to take immediate action to improve the welfare of members of the Armed Forces. They assert that adequate welfare is critical to successful efforts to combat insecurity in Nigeria.
This plea was articulated in a statement released yesterday as part of the observance of this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day. The caucus highlighted that inadequate welfare, lack of proper equipment, and insufficient logistics continue to hinder effective security operations.
Led by Minority Leader Rep. Kingsley Chinda, the caucus underscored that soldiers, who put their lives on the line to protect the nation, merit enhanced support.
In paying tribute to the bravery and sacrifices made by both fallen and active personnel, the lawmakers emphasized that bolstered welfare initiatives, increased funding, and access to contemporary military tools would markedly enhance morale and operational effectiveness.
The caucus pointed out that insecurity poses a significant threat to the nation’s economic prosperity, social stability, and overall development, asserting that addressing the welfare challenges of the military is crucial for restoring peace throughout the nation.
They urged the Federal Government to prioritize robust welfare programs for military staff, which should enhance living conditions, ensure timely allowance payments, provide healthcare, insurance, and assistance for the families of deceased heroes.
Furthermore, the Minority Caucus pledged to advocate for legislative measures and oversight to guarantee that defense budgets are spent transparently and that the Armed Forces are equipped with sufficient resources to safeguard lives and property effectively.
The statement was co-signed by Minority Leader Rep. O.K. Chinda; Minority Whip, Rt. Hon. Ali Isa J.C.; Deputy Minority Leader, Rt. Hon. Aliyu Madaki; and Deputy Minority Whip, Rt. Hon. George Ozodinobi.
