MultiChoice, a subsidiary of the French media conglomerate Canal+, has declared that all Showmax subscriptions will terminate on April 1, as it shifts its content to its sister service, DStv Stream.

The announcement was communicated to subscribers via an email, which was subsequently shared with this publication.

This significant transition also indicates the impending conclusion of the standalone Showmax platform on April 30, which signifies the end of an era for one of Africa’s leading streaming services.

Migration of Content

In the new framework, Showmax Originals and selected titles will be available in a distinct section within DStv Stream, alongside features like live television, sports, and an extensive library of both local and international content.

MultiChoice stated that this strategic move aims to consolidate its streaming offerings, enabling subscribers to enjoy both live TV and on-demand content on a single platform. This approach is gaining traction among global media companies striving to retain their audience amidst fierce competition.

Kemi Omotosho, the CEO of MultiChoice Nigeria, commented, "This move illustrates DStv’s ongoing belief in streaming, merging on-demand entertainment with live television tailored to contemporary viewing preferences."

The existing Showmax subscribers will be transferred to DStv Stream at no extra charge until May 31 and will be placed on the Compact package.

Achievements of Showmax

Since its inception in 2015, Showmax has contributed significantly to the growth of premium African streaming content, commissioning and distributing locally produced series that received both regional and global acclaim. Notable titles such as ‘Wura’, ‘Flawsome’, ‘Cheta M’, and ‘The Real Housewives of Lagos’ have reshaped viewer expectations for African television. Additionally, collaborative productions like Spinners, from the alliance of MultiChoice and Canal+, showcased the international potential of African narratives.

Although the structural changes are unfolding, Omotosho emphasized that MultiChoice’s commitment to African storytelling will persist. "Showmax has played a crucial role in unlocking a wave of world-class African storytelling. This dedication remains unchanged," she assured.

What Subscribers Can Expect

The designated Showmax section on DStv Stream will offer a curated array of some of the platform’s most celebrated titles, such as Princess on a Hill, Under the Influence, and regional sensations like The Wife (South Africa) and Single Kiasi (Kenya).

Users on Compact, Compact Plus, and Premium packages—both satellite and streaming-only—will gain access to this content, alongside over 100 live channels and thousands of hours of on-demand programming.

Fans can also enjoy major sporting events like the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, La Liga, and Serie A through SuperSport, marking a notable expansion from the offerings of Showmax Premier League, which was previously accessible solely on mobile devices.

DStv Stream supports a broader range of devices than its predecessor, including smart TVs, laptops, and mobile phones, while also providing features such as live TV pause and rewind, offline downloads, and personalized content suggestions.
