SSC Napoli is contemplating disciplinary measures against Romelu Lukaku following his absence from training.
The club released an official statement addressing the matter, confirming that "SSC Napoli announces that Romelu Lukaku did not respond to today’s call-up for the resumption of training. The Club reserves the right to decide whether to take appropriate disciplinary action, as well as whether to continue the player’s activity with the squad on a permanent basis."
Lukaku, who is 32 years old, has opted to remain in Belgium to receive treatment for a hip injury. His choice has reportedly frustrated club officials, especially considering his limited participation this season due to a prolonged hamstring injury.
In a statement, Lukaku elaborated on his health issues and the reasoning behind his absence. He stated, "This season has been very challenging for me, between the injury and the personal loss. The truth is that in recent weeks I haven’t been feeling well physically… it turned out there was inflammation and fluid in the iliopsoas muscle."
He further emphasized, "I chose to do the rehabilitation in Belgium so I can be ready when I’m called upon… I could never turn my back on Napoli, never." Although he returned to play in January, Lukaku has not yet made a start in a Serie A match this season, leading to growing concerns regarding his fitness and status within the team.
As he approaches the final year of his contract, uncertainty surrounding his future at Napoli has increased, with a potential transfer during the summer becoming more likely.
