Nigeria's Federal Government has launched a National Textbook Ranking System designed for primary, junior, and senior secondary schools. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance quality assurance and achieve greater standardisation within the nation's education sector.
The Federal Ministry of Education announced the new policy in a statement released on April 26, 2026. The system intends to curb the uncontrolled spread of textbooks, ensuring that only superior, curriculum-compliant materials are sanctioned for use in classrooms. The framework will be fully implemented in September 2026, following extensive stakeholder consultations and detailed framework development.
According to the official statement, Maruf Tunji Alausa, the Honourable Minister of Education, and Suwaiba Sai’d Ahmad, the Honourable Minister of State for Education, confirmed that the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) will continue to hold its official mandate for approving textbooks. However, these approved materials will now undergo a formal national ranking process to identify the most suitable options for each subject and educational level.
The statement further elaborated that the NERDC will constitute dedicated Standing Subject Committees. These committees, composed of academic specialists, will conduct thorough evaluations based on established academic and pedagogical standards. Only a select number of top-ranking textbooks will receive approval for nationwide adoption.
It was clearly stated that "any textbook not ranked will not be permitted for use, regardless of prior licensing status." This declaration highlights the government's resolute effort to enforce more stringent quality control measures and ensure uniformity in educational resources throughout the country.
The Federal Government has reiterated its dedication to boosting educational achievements and guaranteeing that students benefit from access to top-tier educational resources.
