A Nigerian footballer, Chinonso Jeremiah Obi, who is currently playing in Lithuania, has been admitted to the hospital after sustaining injuries from a knife attack on Tuesday.

Reports from Lithuania indicate that Obi was attacked while his team, FK Dainava, was preparing for an upcoming league one game against Taurus in Taurage.

The incident took place at around 11 AM near an apartment building located on Naujoji Street in Alytus.

Obi was walking to where the team was set to board a transport for the match when he was stabbed from behind by his assailant, a male born in 2007.

Chinonso Jeremiah Obi, a Nigerian player currently in Lithuania, has been hospitalized following a knife attack.

The player suffered stab wounds to his stomach, buttocks, and arm before being rescued and restrained by the club's administrator.

Good Samaritans aided Obi, who was subsequently rushed to the hospital. Reports indicate that the condition of the 20-year-old player, originally from Lagos, is critical.

The club publicly denounced the attack via Facebook, expressing their shock concerning the serious crime against their player.

As a result of the incident, the team has decided to cancel their plans to participate in the match in Taurage.

“What transpired today is both incomprehensible and unforgivable. Our player has become a victim of a grave crime – he was attacked with a knife and is currently hospitalized in serious condition,” the club stated.

“The players and the Alytus football community are in disbelief, thus we will refrain from playing in Tauragė today – the match has been postponed.”

Dainava also expressed hope that the assailant, who is now in police custody, would face severe consequences for his actions while wishing for Obi's full recovery.

The Lithuanian football federation has also condemned the attack. They described Obi as “a young individual striving to build a career and contributing to the success of his team.”

Edgaras Stankevičius, the federation President, condemned the attack, suggesting it was racially motivated and advocating for the safety of all players irrespective of their backgrounds.

“Racism has no place in football or society. Every player, no matter their nationality, skin color, or origin, should feel secure and be allowed to perform at their best – entertaining fans in the stadiums. Football globally should serve as a unifying force rather than a divisive one.”
