Samuel Ortom, the immediate past governor of Benue State, has confessed that his decision to impose a particular governorship candidate on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 general elections was a grave political error, which he believes directly contributed to the party's loss.
Ortom issued a public apology to his former political appointees and supporters for advocating for Engr. Titus Uba as the PDP's governorship flagbearer, admitting that the choice was incorrect and had considerable repercussions.
Speaking on Sunday in Makurdi, while hosting a solidarity visit from former appointees at his residence, Ortom elaborated on the circumstances surrounding the decision.
The former governor stated that the endorsement was made without seeking divine counsel and despite clear indicators that later proved to be crucial.
"I made a mistake by imposing a candidate on all of you. I did not ask God. During the mock primaries, he came fourth, not even third," Ortom confessed.
He further disclosed that several individuals had advised him against backing the candidate, warning that he would be difficult to promote politically.
Ortom also expressed disappointment that his associates did not challenge his decision at the time.
"How many of you told me I was making a mistake? Next time, don’t be afraid of your leader," he remarked.
Additionally, Ortom revealed that he had no intention of running for the senatorial seat in 2023, asserting that the decision was made without his agreement and without divine endorsement.
He indicated that this experience served as a valuable lesson, influencing his choice not to contest the election results in court.
Looking towards the 2027 political landscape, Ortom confirmed that he would not be seeking any elective office, emphasizing his belief that leadership should be determined by divine will rather than political imposition.
"I remain in the PDP and I am not going anywhere, but I believe in strategic partnership. Politics is about inclusion and interest, not fighting," he stated.
He acknowledged Senator George Akume, the current Secretary to the Government of the Federation, as a pivotal figure in Benue State politics and called for collaborative efforts among political stakeholders across party lines to ensure the state's stability.
