Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has dispelled rumors regarding the state’s expectation of federal reimbursement for road repairs executed by the state government. According to him, there is no arrangement for such payments from the federal government.

During his monthly media briefing on Friday night, Otti emphasized the recent federal policy, stating that it permits states to toll federal roads should they desire to recuperate their expenses.

He expressed sympathy for those circulating the reimbursement rumors, attributing their comments to a lack of understanding of the situation.

The governor reaffirmed his administration's promise to improve all roads in Abia, be they federal or state, highlighting that all roads are utilized by residents of Abia.

"Before we embark on any federal road, we engage in extensive discussions with the federal government, ensuring that the roads are formally ceded to us in writing," he noted.

Addressing the issue of compensation for the rehabilitation of the Umuahia- Ikot Ekpene Road, Otti mentioned he anticipates federal support for the project, as it was awarded without funding.

"We always provide compensation for any roads we are working on. However, my perspective is that if compensation is necessary, it should have been disbursed by the federal government, as this route was awarded but not funded," he stated, although he acknowledged uncertainty regarding the details.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the Abia State Government has committed to rehabilitating several federal roads, including the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene Road, the Owerrinta-Umuikaa dual carriageway, and the Ohafia-Arochukwu Road.

Furthermore, Governor Otti reiterated his administration’s dedication to launching a state police force, indicating that the new general manager for Homeland Security is preparing the necessary groundwork for its establishment.

He also confirmed his intent to seek re-election under the Labour Party (LP) banner in 2027, stating that the Supreme Court ruling has resolved the party leadership conflict. He encouraged interested Nigerians to register for LP membership.

Otti expressed enthusiasm over the newly introduced electric buses, revealing that an additional 30 buses are expected by July, which would increase the fleet to a total of 50.
