The Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government Area, Jubril Emilagba, has declared that no person is to sleep within Oyingbo Market due to increasing security worries and the need to ensure the safety of lives and property.

Emilagba announced this guideline during a security conference with market executives and members on Friday, explaining that this initiative is part of his administration's ongoing mission to enhance safety measures in markets throughout the local government area.

He stated that the prohibition on overnight stays serves as a precautionary strategy to prevent criminal activities and protect traders as well as their merchandise. "No one is allowed to sleep in the market. This directive is thoroughly for security reasons, to stop criminal elements from exploiting the environment," he emphasized, indicating that markets should function primarily as spaces for legitimate business, not as areas for overnight dwellings.

The chairman added that the local government is set to work closely with relevant security forces and market leadership to oversee adherence to this order. "We are dedicated to making sure that Oyingbo Market remains secure for vendors, shoppers, and the local community. Law enforcement will assist in enforcing this rule," he explained.

Emilagba reiterated his administration’s focus on regular communication with market stakeholders, indicating that collaboration with traders is vital for achieving a secure and organized marketplace. He also informed traders about the significance of signing up for the National Identification Number and the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency, declaring that these are essential tools for effective identity management and planning secure strategies. Furthermore, he urged eligible vendors to engage in the ongoing All Progressives Congress e-registration to foster grassroots political involvement.

In response to the new rule, Basira Balogun, the Women Leader of Oyingbo Market, voiced her approval, calling the directive a timely measure. "We understand the security reasons behind it, and we will collaborate with the local government to ensure traders comply," she stated.
