The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) is urging political authorities to exhibit empathy and take concrete actions aimed at reducing the hardships faced by Nigerians during this Palm Sunday celebration.
Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the President of CAN, emphasized in a recent statement that the essence of Palm Sunday embodies messages of peace, humility, and hope. He encouraged leaders to embody these virtues in their governance, particularly in light of the ongoing economic hardships.
He stated, “As we celebrate Palm Sunday, we are reminded of a momentous occasion. Jesus made his entry into Jerusalem with calmness during an era filled with uncertainty. It was not a display of dominance but rather a message advocating for peace, intention, and hope. At a time of tension, he exemplified humility, choosing to ride on a humble colt instead of showcasing power. This choice continues to resonate with us today.
“In various regions across Nigeria, many are burdened by mounting challenges. Living costs are rising, complicating daily life for numerous families. Global events, particularly conflicts involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, are affecting international energy markets, the consequences of which are being felt domestically. The prices of fuel, transportation, and food have surged significantly. In times like this, the calming essence of Palm Sunday becomes increasingly relevant.
“For many Nigerians, there is a pressing concern: how to adapt, how to plan, how to survive. When circumstances seem precarious, the national atmosphere becomes crucial. Words are impactful, and actions yield effects. Palm Sunday reminds us that in troubling times, reassurance is essential. Stability is a necessity, coupled with a quiet assurance that those in authoritative positions recognize their struggles.
“This is why the lessons of Palm Sunday are vital for leadership. Exemplary leadership is often characterized by tranquility; it is demonstrated through restraint, empathy, and a focused concern for collective betterment. It reveals itself through decisions that lighten burdens, alleviate fears, and foster unity. This moment calls for such sagacity.
“For the Church and the faithful, Palm Sunday serves as a reminder of responsibility. It evokes a special instance when individuals from diverse backgrounds united with a common goal: to receive the Messiah with hope, humility, and anticipation. This spirit is essential today. We must advocate for peace, promote unity, and support each other. In a period that could easily turn contentious, we need to be a consistent source of hope and illumination.
“To all Nigerians, particularly the youth and those bearing the brunt of these challenges, retain your hope. Although the obstacles are substantial, they do not signify the conclusion of our journey. As we move through this sacred season, may the essence of Palm Sunday inspire us toward quiet bravery, collective purpose, and a revived commitment to communal welfare.
