Taminu Turaki, the leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), disclosed that the party is engaging in high-level diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving its internal disputes.

At a press conference held on Wednesday in Abuja, Mr. Turaki provided updates regarding the party's reconciliation initiatives, which followed a two-day emergency consultative meeting.

He mentioned that the conflicting factions within the party are currently exploring several avenues for a sustainable resolution to their disputes.

Mr. Turaki indicated that these reconciliation efforts were prompted by an advisory from the Court of Appeal in Ibadan, which suggested that the PDP pursue an out-of-court settlement for its internal matters.

This approach aims to enable the involved parties to consider reconciliation, thereby preventing further discord and creating a solid foundation for party members aspiring to contest in the 2027 general elections.

Consequently, he revealed that the Board of Trustees (BoT), under the leadership of Adolphus Wabara, has established a committee dedicated to engaging with estranged members.

To demonstrate goodwill, Turaki stated that his National Working Committee (NWC) has decided to postpone the planned National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Caucus meetings.

“We have taken steps to reduce combative communications on all fronts,” he explained.

Turaki expressed disappointment over the lack of reciprocal gestures from opposing groups, noting a trend of harmful rhetoric and derogatory statements.

Despite these challenges, he reassured party leaders of the significance of resolving the conflict and urged the rival faction to act in the best interest of the party.

“I can confirm that leaders from both sides have begun to communicate and are seeking possible ways to achieve a lasting resolution,” he affirmed.

He called on all PDP supporters to temper their rhetoric and actions, emphasizing the importance of preserving the peace process.

Turaki reassured PDP members that the party intends to field candidates for all electoral positions during the 2027 general elections, in alignment with Article 6(2) of the PDP Constitution, 2017, as revised.

“I assure Nigerians that the PDP remains active and will participate in the forthcoming elections, providing a credible platform for meaningful political competition that empowers the populace,” he stated.

When queried about the various legal challenges currently pending in courts, Turaki conveyed that his faction is prepared to make sacrifices to ensure the success of the reconciliation effort.

“Once we arrive at acceptable terms, we will promptly withdraw all cases, whether at the Federal High Court, Court of Appeal, or the Supreme Court, to facilitate peace,” he added.

In terms of compromise, he mentioned their willingness to accommodate as much as feasible.

“We are prepared to make various sacrifices in the overall interest of the party. The PDP will not cease to exist,” he assured.

While acknowledging the presence of potential disruptors in the peace initiative, Turaki noted that such individuals had been identified during discussions held on Tuesday night.

He urged the public to continue using the party's e-registration portal, reinforcing that their internal mechanisms would strengthen the PDP ahead of future electoral contests.

Additionally, Turaki reported that the NWC unanimously expressed confidence in the leadership of Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State for their steadfastness amidst recent difficulties.

It is pertinent to note that a faction led by Abdulrahman Mohammed is supported by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who, despite being a part of the PDP, serves as a minister in the APC-led federal government.
