Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, has asserted that Nigeria’s ongoing poverty is not a result of insufficient resources, but rather a consequence of decisions made by its leaders and citizens.
Speaking in Abuja during a meeting with members of the Association of Skilled and Vocational Artisans of Nigeria (ASVAN), under the leadership of National President Comrade Obijuru Everest, Obi emphasized that a nation rich in oil, gas, and a significant young population should not be facing the extreme poverty currently observed.
Obi pointed out that the actual challenge lies in leadership and a system that celebrates corrupt practices rather than addressing them directly.
"We are poor because we have chosen to be poor. We bestow titles and front-row honors upon those who misappropriate public funds, all the while expecting economic growth," Obi stated.
He referenced Indonesia's experience, highlighting that despite sharing similar demographic and geographical features with Nigeria, the Asian nation has made notable economic advancements thanks to more decisive leadership and explicit national goals.
Obi shared that during a past discussion with an Indonesian leader, he received advice stressing that combating corruption, heavily investing in education and healthcare, and empowering citizens to contribute productively to the economy were crucial for national progress.
He reiterated that nations that attain sustainable growth prioritize people and support small businesses, noting that Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) thrive when governments establish stable and transparent regulations.
"Join the movement for a better Nigeria. Cease venerating those who misappropriate your wealth, stop granting them accolades, and advocate for integrity. Vote, protect your votes, and help cultivate competent leaders from the local to the presidential level, and you will witness a transformation in the country," he urged.
Earlier, Comrade Obijuru Everest expressed that ASVAN has been closely monitoring Obi's political journey and believes in the importance of backing his aspirations for the nation's development.
