Sarah Ferguson, the former wife of Prince Andrew, could potentially be interviewed by authorities following her ex-husband's recent arrest, as reported by senior legal officials in the UK.
Currently, Fergusson, aged 66, is thought to be residing in the United Arab Emirates after having left her previous residence at Royal Lodge. Prince Andrew was taken into custody early Thursday morning by Thames Valley Police on allegations related to misconduct in public office.
Though there are no allegations of illegal actions against Ferguson herself, a prominent barrister informed Page Six that police could view her as a key witness in the investigation.
"The police may have grounds to question Sarah Ferguson since she might hold relevant information regarding this case," the legal source stated. "They may wish to ask her various questions. Although Ferguson wasn't in public office during the relevant period, it's unclear what information she might possess, particularly if it pertains to her prior role as an ex-royal and Andrew's former spouse."
The barrister also emphasized that determining whether to question her fully depends on the police. "This is ultimately at the discretion of the police," they mentioned, adding, "As part of the investigation, they reserve the right to approach whoever they think is necessary."
Ferguson and Andrew divorced in 1996 and share two children, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. Despite their divorce, Ferguson has often defended Andrew publicly, notably after he took a step back from royal duties and lost his HRH title.
In previously disclosed emails associated with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, there appeared to be indications of Ferguson seeking financial support. Documents known as the Epstein Files purportedly included a message from her to Epstein in January 2010 stating, "Just marry me," following his release from incarceration.
Furthermore, in a May 2010 email, Ferguson allegedly expressed a desire to work as Epstein's "House Assistant," sharing that she was in dire financial straits and felt "very traumatized and alone." A report also mentioned that in 2009, she sought £20,000 for rental assistance amid fears that her landlord might leak information to the press.
Andrew's arrest took place on his 66th birthday and centers around allegations that he improperly shared confidential trade documents with Epstein. If found guilty, he faces a potential maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
Law enforcement officers apprehended him at his interim residence located on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. At the time of the arrest, Ferguson was believed to be out of the country, having spent some of the previous days in the French Alps before heading to the UAE.
A spokesperson for Ferguson has opted not to comment on the circumstances surrounding Andrew's arrest.
