U.S. President Donald Trump has officially removed Kristi Noem from her position as Secretary of Homeland Security. In her stead, he revealed plans to nominate Oklahoma Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin.

This announcement was made by Trump via a post on Truth Social on Thursday, shortly after Noem faced intense questioning from both GOP and Democratic members in a Congressional hearing.

Trump acknowledged Noem’s contributions during her tenure, citing her "numerous and spectacular results." He further stated that she would now serve as a special envoy for the newly launched "Shield of the Americas," a security initiative aimed at the Western Hemisphere.

In her response, Noem expressed gratitude to the president for her new appointment, mentioning on X that she looked forward to collaborating with other leaders to combat drug cartels responsible for the influx of illicit substances into the United States.

Noem’s departure marks her as the first cabinet secretary to exit the Trump administration during its second term. This decision comes on the heels of two challenging days where she was scrutinized by Congressional lawmakers regarding her leadership capabilities.

During the hearings, Noem received significant backlash from her fellow Republicans, particularly regarding a controversial $220 million advertising campaign that encouraged undocumented individuals to depart voluntarily.

While she asserted that Trump had prior knowledge of the advertising effort, the president contradicted this claim during an interview with Reuters, stating he hadn’t approved the campaign.
