Paris Saint-Germain has taken a substantial step towards the Champions League semi-finals, achieving a commanding 2-0 victory against Liverpool in the first leg of their quarter-final encounter in Paris.

The French league leaders, PSG, sealed the win thanks to goals from Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, outplaying a subdued Liverpool team that registered no shots on target throughout the match.

PSG broke the deadlock in the 11th minute. Desire Doue's shot from inside the penalty area took a deflection off Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk and sailed over the head of stand-in goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. This early goal set the tone for a game where PSG consistently controlled possession and found ways to penetrate Liverpool's defence.

Mamardashvili, who was deputizing for the injured Alisson Becker, made a series of crucial saves to prevent PSG from extending their lead further. He notably denied Khvicha Kvaratskhelia with a one-handed stop and later thwarted Doue from adding a second goal.

However, Kvaratskhelia eventually found the net, showcasing his brilliance. He received a defence-splitting pass from Joao Neves and skillfully rounded the goalkeeper to double PSG's advantage.

Liverpool, still affected by a recent heavy loss to Manchester City, adopted a defensive strategy with five at the back. Despite this, they struggled to contain PSG's potent attack. Ousmane Dembele missed several opportunities to increase PSG's lead, squandering chances throughout the game.

The match saw further controversy towards the end when a penalty, initially awarded to PSG for an incident involving Ibrahima Konate, was rescinded after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review. Konate also faced another potential penalty call in stoppage time for a foul on Nuno Mendes, but it was not given.

Alexander Isak made his return to the field as a substitute for Liverpool, but the team offered little in the way of an attacking threat. They now face a significant challenge to turn the tie around in the second leg at Anfield next Tuesday.
