The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has taken steps to quell speculation regarding the future of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle. The NFF asserts that the Franco-Malian coach is firmly dedicated to the national team and is not planning to depart in the near future.
Amid reports linking him with interests from other national sides, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau reiterated that Chelle remains contracted and integral to Nigeria's football future.
Chelle, who successfully guided the Super Eagles to a third-place finish in the recent AFCON tournament held in Morocco, is reportedly attracting attention from teams such as Tunisia and Angola. Mr. Gusau stated, “We still have a one-year contract with Eric, and as such, any interest directed towards him will have to wait until his contract concludes,” shared in an interview by the Super Eagles media team.
Besides contractual obligations, the NFF president highlighted the federation’s aim to safeguard the progress made under Chelle’s guidance. He remarked, “We do not want to create distractions for him, as we understand he enjoys working with Nigeria.”
Mr. Gusau disapproved of the notion that Chelle's future could be influenced by financial incentives or transient success elsewhere.
“It isn’t merely about which team expresses interest or the results he obtains with the Super Eagles. Transitioning to another side, even with a higher salary, does not guarantee success,” he noted.
He suggested that meaningful coaching success is contingent on the environment provided for achieving objectives. “The pressing matter is whether the resources exist for him to work with, to accomplish what he aspires to. Every coach dreams of thriving, particularly in higher-tier tournaments.”
Mr. Gusau encouraged a focus on career fulfillment over monetary rewards. “In seeking a new coach, it’s crucial to ask whether he will fulfill his aspirations or merely chase after financial gain.”
He affirmed Chelle's strong commitment to the Super Eagles project, stating, “I believe Coach Eric sees value in the Super Eagles and trusts that he can reach his coaching goals within the African football landscape.”
The NFF has engaged in numerous discussions with Chelle regarding his short- term prospects, reinforcing their confidence in his vision for the team.
“We have great confidence in Chelle, and when the appropriate time arises, we will move towards advancing Nigeria's football agenda. Eric is a vital part of the Super Eagles and will continue to be,” Mr. Gusau proclaimed.
He acknowledged notable advancements under Chelle’s leadership during the latest AFCON tournament, particularly in terms of tactical execution and aggressiveness in attack.
“Despite not capturing the championship, we were the highest scoring team in the competition, and our performance was commendable,” Mr. Gusau noted, pointing out that Nigeria did not lose any matches during regular or extra time, except for the semi-final decided by penalties.
This performance was seen as indicative of significant progress, supported by institutional encouragement. He stated, “This reflects a marked improvement in the squad. We owe gratitude to the government for their backing via the National Sports Commission.”
Looking forward, the NFF anticipates further growth, particularly with the inclusion of younger talents. “We believe this is merely the beginning, especially concerning the identification of new youthful players.”
Plans to assess new talents were postponed due to competitive match schedules. “Unfortunately, we have a playoff scenario now, but we have the March window ahead, and we still intend to explore the potential of integrating fresh young players into the squad,” he concluded.
Currently, the clear and resolute message from the NFF is that Eric Chelle is committed to the Super Eagles, with the organization aiming to build around him.
