Police operatives in Rivers State have apprehended a 24-year-old individual identified as Otamiri Prince, following allegations of kidnapping and rape.
The suspect is accused of luring a woman, whom he had connected with online, to a secluded area in Igwuruta community on April 11th. According to reports, Prince and associates subsequently abducted and assaulted the victim.
ASP Agabe Kaborlo Blessing, the Police Public Relations Officer for the state, confirmed the arrest on Sunday. She stated that efforts are underway to locate and apprehend other individuals believed to be involved in the incident. Once apprehended, all suspects will face legal proceedings.
According to the victim's statement, a 24-year-old woman named Miss Thomas Alice, she reported that she was kidnapped on January 3rd, 2026, by someone she met through an online platform.
The victim detailed that she was deceived into going to Igwuruta, from where she was taken by accomplices to a bush in Ulakwo, located within the Etche Local Government Area. There, she claims she was assaulted, raped, and robbed of her belongings before being released.
Upon receiving the report, the Command's operatives initiated an immediate investigation. Utilizing technology-enhanced strategies, reportedly supported by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, the investigation led to the apprehension of Otamiri Prince. The suspect has reportedly confessed to the crime and handed over recovered items, including an iPhone, a wig believed to belong to the victim, and other valuables.
Authorities are continuing their search for the other members of the gang, and the investigation is ongoing. The suspect(s) will be formally charged in court upon completion of the inquiries.
The Commissioner of Police for the Rivers State Command, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, advised women and young ladies to exercise extreme caution when engaging with individuals met online. He urged them to avoid arranging meetings with strangers in isolated or unfamiliar places.
CP Adepoju further recommended that individuals always inform trusted family members or friends about their whereabouts, thoroughly verify identities before meeting in person, select public and safe locations for encounters, and maintain constant vigilance. He stressed the importance of contacting the police immediately through designated emergency lines if any suspicion arises or if intervention is required.
