Royal Navy ships have intercepted Russian naval vessels in the English Channel as part of a two-day operation conducted in collaboration with NATO allies, according to UK defense officials.
British naval patrols and aircraft were deployed to monitor what officials referred to as portions of Russia's "shadow fleet" as the ships navigated waters near the United Kingdom. The operation involved the Royal Navy patrol boats HMS Mersey and HMS Severn, both located in Portsmouth, and was backed by a Wildcat helicopter from 815 Naval Air Squadron.
The Royal Navy announced that the task force intercepted and kept watch on the Russian corvette Boikiy along with the accompanying oil tanker MT General Skobelev, which had previously been tracked by allied forces after it moved through the Bay of Biscay. The vessels were returning from a mission in the Mediterranean and were heading toward the North Sea.
As the Russian vessels neared the Isle of Wight, the British ships and helicopter utilized onboard sensors to track their movements and collect intelligence that was subsequently shared with pertinent agencies. Once the ships reached the North Sea, the responsibility for monitoring them was handed off to NATO allies.
The UK Minister for Armed Forces, Al Carns, stated that the operation conveyed a strong message to Moscow. "With this operation, our sailors have once again communicated clearly to Vladimir Putin — we are fully aware of what his navy is doing," he remarked. "Each time a Russian ship approaches the UK, the Navy stands ready to monitor, deter, and defend."
Lieutenant Commander Dan Wardle, who commands HMS Mersey, expressed that the operation showcased the Royal Navy's commitment to safeguarding UK maritime interests. He highlighted that working in conjunction with HMS Severn and NATO partners allowed for the exchange of expertise and best practices, reinforcing the strength of allied collaboration.
Lieutenant Commander Ross Gallagher of 815 Naval Air Squadron pointed out that the operation again highlighted the high degree of preparedness and professionalism maintained within the unit.
This interception represents the latest in a series of interactions involving Russian vessels near UK and allied waters. British officials have indicated that heightened surveillance of Russian naval and tanker activities forms part of broader strategies by the UK and its allies to enforce sanctions and counter actions associated with Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
