Senate Denounces Mass Killing of 56 Individuals in Niger

The Senate has expressed its outrage over the killing of 56 Nigerian citizens and the abduction of women and children in Konkoso village, Niger State, branding the assault as appalling and intolerable.

This condemnation arose from a motion of urgent national importance presented by Senator Sani Musa of Niger East during an emergency Senate meeting on Tuesday.

Senator Musa informed his colleagues that the tragic events unfolded in Konkoso and the adjacent Pissa villages, where more than 56 individuals lost their lives and numerous women and children were taken.

He elaborated that these communities are positioned near significant forests that connect with neighboring states, serving as pathways exploited by terrorists for cross-border movements and orchestrating criminal activities.

Mr. Musa cautioned that the North-central region has seen an increase in assaults on rural neighborhoods and agricultural lands, jeopardizing food security, local economies, and overall national stability.

Acknowledging the continuous counterterrorism initiatives undertaken by President Bola Tinubu and various security agencies, he recognized the sacrifices made by the troops engaged in combating violent extremism nationwide.

Nonetheless, the senator raised concerns regarding how frequent attacks on remote areas indicate weaknesses in effective intelligence collection, interagency coordination, prompt response capabilities, and a stable security presence in vulnerable communities.

He further noted that the kidnapping of women and children has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, causing deep-seated psychological stress within families and dislocating the fabric of affected communities.

Emphasizing the need for comprehensive reforms and modernizing Nigeria's security architecture, Mr. Musa warned that unless such measures are implemented, similar atrocities could continue despite ongoing military and intelligence efforts.

In supporting the motion, the Chief Whip of the Senate, Mohammed Monguno, urged for increased financial allocations to security agencies to address the current security concerns.

“During the ongoing budget defense, we discovered there were no capital budget releases for security agencies,” he stated.

“In light of the President’s declaration of a state of emergency regarding security, it is critical that greater emphasis is placed on the needs of security agencies,” he stated.

The members of the Senate held a moment of silence in honor of the victims and extended their sympathies to the families affected, as well as the government and populace of Niger State.

The Senate has called for the immediate deployment of more security personnel to the affected areas to bolster rapid response capabilities and deter future incidents.

Additionally, they have instructed their Committees on Defence, Army, Air Force, Police Affairs, and National Security to carry out a collaborative evaluation and provide feedback within four weeks.
