The head coach of the Senegalese men's national football team, Pape Thiaw, has reiterated that Senegal rightfully holds the title of African champions despite having it revoked by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Speaking from Paris before a friendly fixture against Peru at the Stade de France, Thiaw dismissed the ruling that awarded the championship to Morocco.
"My focus is on my responsibilities. It's essential to remain undistracted. Everyone recognizes us as the champions of Africa," he stated. "We will continue to labor hard to secure more trophies. Winning is what counts, and that happens on the field."
In the decisive match held in Rabat, Senegal triumphed over Morocco 1-0, thanks to a goal from Pape Gueye during extra time. However, the encounter was marred by a protest from Senegal's players regarding a penalty decision, which led to heightened tensions.
Following an appeal from Morocco, CAF concluded that Senegal breached tournament rules, resulting in the annulment of the original outcome to a 3-0 loss for Senegal and the reallocation of the championship to Morocco. Senegal has since contested this ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Team captain Idrissa Gana Gueye spoke in defense of their performance: "We rightfully earned the title of African champions on the field, and we'll endeavor to affirm that off the field as well. We didn't illegitimately secure these results; an entire nation applied itself fully, showcasing dedication both during and after matches."
Gueye also reflected on the emotional significance of their victory, highlighting Senegal's impressive performances in recent tournaments: "The feelings we have experienced are irreplaceable," he noted. This upcoming friendly against Peru serves as part of Senegal’s preparations for the forthcoming World Cup, where they are slated to encounter France, Norway, and a playoff winner in the group stages.
