Police officials in Akwa Ibom State have successfully dismantled a human trafficking syndicate, managing to rescue seven victims in the process. Four individuals alleged to be connected to this network have been taken into custody.
The police conducted this operation based on actionable intelligence received on March 13, which indicated that a vehicle transporting young people suspected to be victims of trafficking was traveling along the Ikot Ekpene–Aba Road.
Following the intelligence, the police mobilized a patrol unit to conduct a stop-and-search operation along the identified route.
During the operation, the vehicle in question was stopped, leading to the immediate rescue of four victims and the arrest of the suspects.
Timfon John, the police spokesperson for Akwa Ibom, issued a statement on Saturday confirming the swift response by the police patrol team.
Further questioning of the arrested suspects opened up additional leads, prompting police to extend their investigation to several locations in the state.
As a result, three more victims were rescued in Itam and Ibaka, located in the Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom, along with three more suspects.
This latest development has increased the total number of rescued individuals to seven, with all four suspects currently detained by the police.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the trafficking syndicate was involved in the recruitment and transportation of young people across international borders for exploitative purposes. Authorities disclosed that one of the suspected masterminds of the operation had previously fled via waterways to Cameroon and Gabon, taking several victims with them before the police intervention.
Among the rescued victims are three young women from Benin: Asana Wohabu, aged 18; Fusina Seru, aged 20; and Latif Ali, aged 19; along with Malike Michel from Togo. The group also includes Mulica Ismali, 20; Saidat Ismali, 19; and Safura Ismali, aged 20, all from Oyo State in Nigeria.
Currently, those apprehended are identified as Udeme Jacob, 20, from Mbo Local Government Area; Effiong Ekop from Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area; John Okon, also from Mbo; and Ndukwe Ogbonnaya from Bende Local Government Area in Abia State.
Ongoing investigations are set to continue, and the suspects are expected to face legal proceedings once the inquiry is concluded.
