South Africa is set to step in as the host for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after it was reported that Morocco has opted out of hosting the event.

This announcement came on Sunday evening from Peace Mabe, South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, during the Super League Awards held in Johannesburg.

The tournament, which also acts as a qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, is scheduled to occur from March 17 to April 3, 2026.

Mabe stated that South Africa is prepared to host the continent’s premier women’s football tournament following Morocco's alleged withdrawal from the hosting responsibility.

"Tonight, I would like to announce that South Africa will be hosting the 2026 WAFCON, which we all know is a qualifying tournament for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil,” remarked Mabe.

If this hosting arrangement is confirmed, South Africa will need to work within a narrow timeframe to prepare for the expanded tournament featuring 16 teams, which will follow a tight schedule.

However, there has been no formal confirmation from the Confederation of African Football regarding the switch in the host country. Additionally, Morocco has yet to officially declare its withdrawal, and the Moroccan Football Federation has not released any formal statements on the matter.

Rumors regarding Morocco’s reported withdrawal are suggested to be tied to political factors or unresolved issues following the disputed 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final held against Senegal, although these claims have not been substantiated.
